Transfer Update: Ross Barkley to Aston Villa
The Luton midfielder has been linked with a move to his former employers Aston Villa. What does this mean for Villa, Luton and Barkley?
Ross Barkley has been brilliant for Luton this season and was one of the driving forces for the Hatter’s survival push, although they eventually fell short. It is something of a remontada for the former Chelsea man, as it seemed like his best days were behind him when he arrived at Kenilworth Road. He quickly proved the doubters wrong with 5 goals and 6 assists in all competitions.
Ross Barkley has had a big impact following his summer move from French side Nice.
Barkley’s first spell at Villa came during the 2020-21 season while on loan from Chelsea. He managed 4 goals in 24 appearances during his time with them and the manager at the time Dean Smith did not attempt to re-sign the former England international.
There are some question marks as to the nature of the transfer, however. It is unclear as to the length of Barkley’s contract, something that the Hatters never disclosed. Regardless of the state of his contract, Barkley will probably not command a large fee. It is a good sign of an astute bit of business from Unai Emery, bringing in an experienced head could be key as his squad is stretched to its limits by Champions League football.
